How This Backyard Basic Got Street Cred
We're first to admit that no modern newbie version can compare to an old, worn-in barn jacket. That sort of faded glamour only comes from a few decades of mucking horse stalls, loading bushels of apples onto pick-up trucks or raking acres of leaves. If you want an authentic vintage one, they're out there at estate sales and in online vintage stores. But let's not be overly precious here. A barn jacket has its roots in the country, but it also belongs in the wardrobe of any hardworking woman who wants earnest utilitarianism with a bit of east-coast fashion flair.
Barn jackets are not a new thing. In fact, L.L.Bean first introduced its Field Coat back in 1924 as the Maine Duck Hunting Coat. Over the next few decades, the rugged cotton-canvas design evolved into the iconic multi-pocket barn coat with a corduroy collar. In 2003, L.L.Bean revamped the design and released it as the Adirondack Barn Coat which you can buy even today. Barbour, the English outdoor apparel company renowned for its waxed cotton outerwear followed along a few decades later with the Bedale. In the years that followed brands from mall to major designers introduced their version of the classic jacket culminating in a jacket-palooza in 2025. So, what's driving interest in them in 2026?
"It's a few things, actually," says stylist Samantha Evans-Redford. "More of us are turning from fast fashion to invest in things that are made from sustainable materials and are built to last. A wears-like-iron jacket in a style that has endured for over a hundred years and that can be found either secondhand or new from a brand that has a reputation for quality perfectly fits where we are right now. And it doesn't hurt that lots of famous style makers including influencers with big reach and stars with big fan clubs are wearing this type of jacket. And, then there's the Martha Stewart factor."
You can invest in a seriously spendy designer barn jacket and still be cool, but we think these six barn jackets from brands with some street cred do the job without breaking the bank.
